Conservation area an irresponsible, temporary solution for native people.
SALT LAKE CITY, June 3, 2016 – Mike Weinholtz, candidate for Utah Governor, had the opportunity to sit with members from the Utah Dine Bikeyah Board yesterday and listen to their concerns, and sentiments about a declaration of Bears Ears as a National Monument. The overwhelming majority of these Navajo communities are in favor of a Bears Ears National Monument declaration, in part, to maintain their ancestral access to the land for future generations.
“Governor Herbert’s rubber stamp support for a ‘conservation area’ is embarrassing, and simple political grandstanding. The current Governor is clearly more interested in scoring political points and easy political dollars than doing what is best for the citizens of this state, in particular, the native peoples that live here. The vast majority of these Navajo communities are in favor of a Bears Ears National Monument, and Herbert’s blatant disregard for their traditional heritage is insulting.”
